Question 1

What lenses are compatible with the Nikon TC-20E III?

Accepted Answer

The TC-20E III is designed for the Nikon F mount and works with a specific set of compatible AF-S and AF-I NIKKOR lenses. It generally pairs best with fast, longer focal-length primes. Not every F-mount lens is supported, so always check Nikon's official compatibility list for your specific lens before buying.

Question 2

How much light do you lose with a 2x teleconverter?

Accepted Answer

A 2x teleconverter reduces the amount of light reaching your sensor, which narrows the effective maximum aperture of your lens. This matters because it can affect autofocus performance, particularly in lower light or with slower lenses. Pairing the TC-20E III with a fast prime lens is strongly recommended to keep autofocus working reliably.

Question 3

Does the Nikon TC-20E III affect autofocus performance?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it does to some degree. The 2x magnification reduces the effective maximum aperture of your lens, which can slow down or limit autofocus — especially in lower light. For the best AF results, pair the TC-20E III with a lens that has a fast maximum aperture. On brighter days or with high-contrast subjects, AF performance holds up well for wildlife and sports shooting.

Question 4

Is the Nikon TC-20E III worth buying used?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Teleconverters are passive optical devices with no moving parts beyond the electrical contacts, so they age very well. A second-hand TC-20E III in good condition delivers the same 2x magnification as a new one. Every used TC-20E III on Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and comes with a minimum of 12 months warranty, so you're covered.

Question 5

What is the difference between the TC-20E III and a 1.4x teleconverter?

Accepted Answer

The key trade-off is reach versus light transmission. The TC-20E III delivers 2x magnification, giving you significantly more reach, but it reduces the effective aperture more than a 1.4x option would. If you shoot in lower light or prioritise sharper autofocus in trickier conditions, a 1.4x teleconverter is the gentler choice. If maximum reach is the priority and you're using a fast prime, the TC-20E III is hard to beat.

Question 6

Can I use the Nikon TC-20E III on a mirrorless camera?

Accepted Answer

The TC-20E III is a Nikon F mount teleconverter, so it's designed for F-mount DSLR bodies. To use it on a Nikon Z-series mirrorless camera, you would need a compatible mount adapter. Keep in mind that autofocus performance when stacking an adapter and teleconverter may vary depending on the lens and camera body combination.
