Question 1

Which Nikon Z lenses are compatible with the TC-1.4x?

Accepted Answer

The Nikon Z TC-1.4x only works with specific Nikon Z-mount lenses that have a built-in teleconverter interface — typically the longer telephoto primes and zooms in the NIKKOR Z lineup. Always check Nikon's compatibility list for your specific lens before buying, as not every Z-mount lens supports it.

Question 2

How much light do you lose with a 1.4x teleconverter?

Accepted Answer

A 1.4x teleconverter costs you one stop of light. So an f/4 lens effectively becomes f/5.6 when the TC-1.4x is attached. That's a relatively small penalty compared to a 2x converter, which costs two stops.

Question 3

Does the Nikon Z TC-1.4x affect autofocus performance?

Accepted Answer

Because a teleconverter reduces the effective maximum aperture by one stop, autofocus can be slower or less reliable in low light — most Z-mount bodies still phase-detect focus with the TC-1.4x attached, but expect some performance reduction compared to shooting without it.

Question 4

Is a used Nikon Z TC-1.4x worth buying?

Accepted Answer

Yes — teleconverters have no moving parts and very little to wear out, which makes them one of the safest used optics purchases you can make. Just check the rear and front glass elements for scratches or dust, and confirm the mount contacts are clean. A pre-owned TC-1.4x in good condition performs identically to a new one.

Question 5

Can I use the Nikon Z TC-1.4x on an F-mount or DSLR body?

Accepted Answer

No. The TC-1.4x is designed exclusively for the Nikon Z mount and is not compatible with F-mount DSLR bodies or lenses — even via an adapter. You need a Nikon Z mirrorless body and a compatible NIKKOR Z lens.

Question 6

What's the difference between the TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x for Nikon Z?

Accepted Answer

The TC-1.4x gives 1.4x reach with just one stop of light loss, making it the better everyday choice when you need autofocus reliability and image quality. The TC-2.0x doubles your focal length but costs two stops of light, which can strain autofocus in anything but bright conditions. If you're unsure, the TC-1.4x is the more versatile pick.
