Question 1

What is the Nikon ZR (RED Z Cinema)?

Accepted Answer

The Nikon ZR is a professional cinema camera developed through Nikon's partnership with RED. It uses a Super 35 sensor — the same format found in many Hollywood-standard cinema cameras — and is designed for high-end film, commercial, and video production work.

Question 2

What sensor size does the Nikon ZR use?

Accepted Answer

The Nikon ZR uses a Super 35 sensor. Super 35 is the dominant format in professional cinema, offering a field of view and depth-of-field rendering that closely matches traditional 35mm film, making it a natural choice for narrative filmmakers and commercial directors.

Question 3

What memory cards does the Nikon ZR use?

Accepted Answer

The Nikon ZR records to CFexpress Type B cards. CFexpress Type B is a high-speed format capable of handling the sustained write speeds required for demanding cinema codecs and high-bitrate video. Make sure your card reader also supports CFexpress Type B when offloading footage.

Question 4

What battery does the Nikon ZR use?

Accepted Answer

The Nikon ZR runs on the EN-EL15c battery. This is a well-established battery in the Nikon ecosystem, so if you already own other Nikon cameras that use the EN-EL15c, there's a good chance you already have compatible spares and chargers ready to go.

Question 5

What lens mount does the Nikon ZR use?

Accepted Answer

The exact lens mount specification for the Nikon ZR hasn't been published in the standard spec sheets available at the time of writing. Given that this is a dedicated cinema body developed through the Nikon/RED collaboration, we'd recommend checking the official Nikon product page or contacting us directly to confirm lens mount and compatibility before purchasing.

Question 6

How does the Super 35 format compare to full-frame for cinema?

Accepted Answer

Super 35 is the traditional cinema standard — it gives you a slight crop compared to full-frame, which means your lenses will have a narrower field of view than on a full-frame body. In practice, this is considered the 'native' cinema look, and a huge library of cinema lenses is designed around it. For narrative filmmaking, Super 35 is often preferred over full-frame.

Question 7

Is the Nikon ZR suitable for wedding videography?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Nikon ZR can work well for wedding videography if you need cinema-grade quality and a Super 35 image. Keep in mind it's a dedicated cinema body rather than a hybrid stills/video camera, so it's best suited to professional video-focused workflows rather than shooters who need to mix stills and video in run-and-gun situations.

Question 8

Is buying a used Nikon ZR a safe choice?

Accepted Answer

Buying a second-hand Nikon ZR from Camera-tweedehands.nl is a safe and practical option. Every camera is professionally inspected and individually photographed before listing, and each comes with a minimum 12 months warranty. The exact warranty period is visible on the product variant page.

Question 9

What CFexpress Type B cards work best with cinema cameras like the Nikon ZR?

Accepted Answer

For cinema-level recording, you'll want CFexpress Type B cards from established brands with high sustained write speeds — not just peak read speeds. Cinema codecs can push sustained write demands far beyond what standard photo bursting requires, so always check the card's sustained write spec rather than relying on the headline number.

Question 10

Does the Nikon ZR require an external power solution for long shoots?

Accepted Answer

The Nikon ZR uses the EN-EL15c in-body battery. For extended cinema shoots, many professionals using dedicated cine bodies supplement with external power solutions to avoid interruptions during takes. We'd recommend checking the official Nikon ZR documentation for supported power input options before building out your rig.

Question 11

What makes the Nikon ZR different from Nikon's hybrid mirrorless cameras?

Accepted Answer

Nikon's hybrid mirrorless cameras are designed to balance stills and video in a single versatile package. The Nikon ZR, by contrast, is a dedicated cinema body built through the Nikon/RED collaboration — it prioritises cinema-specific ergonomics and workflows from the ground up, rather than splitting focus between photography and video. If your primary output is film or high-end video, that's a meaningful architectural difference.

Question 12

Where can I find used Nikon cinema and video cameras?

Accepted Answer

Camera-tweedehands.nl lists used professional cinema and video cameras including the Nikon ZR. Each listing includes individual photos of the actual item, a condition grade, and a minimum 12 months warranty — so you know exactly what you're getting before you buy.
