Question 1

What cameras is the Pentax SMC 6x7 90mm f/2.8 compatible with?

Accepted Answer

This lens is designed for the Pentax 6x7 medium format system and mounts on Pentax 6x7 bodies via the Pentax 67 bayonet mount. Other bodies in the Pentax 6x7 lineup that share this mount will also accept the lens without adapters.

Question 2

What is the 90mm focal length like on a 6x7cm medium format frame?

Accepted Answer

On a 6×7cm medium format frame, 90mm covers a wide-to-normal angle of view — versatile for street, travel, environmental portraiture, and documentary work where you want context around your subject. The exact 35mm equivalent varies depending on how you measure the 6×7 frame diagonal, but it lands in similar territory to a standard or slightly wide prime on a 35mm camera.

Question 3

Is the Pentax SMC 6x7 90mm f/2.8 good for portraits?

Accepted Answer

It's a popular choice for environmental and documentary-style portraits. The f/2.8 maximum aperture gives you subject separation on a medium format frame, which produces noticeably smoother out-of-focus rendering than a comparable aperture on 35mm. If you specifically want shallower depth of field for tight headshots, a longer focal length in the Pentax 6x7 lineup would suit better, but the 90mm is the more flexible all-rounder across shooting situations.

Question 4

Is buying a used Pentax SMC 6x7 90mm f/2.8 worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes — these lenses were built to last and hold up well decades later. When buying second-hand, the main things to check are aperture blade condition (oil-free and snappy), front and rear element clarity (no fungus, heavy haze or deep scratches), and smooth focus throw. A pre-owned copy from a reputable seller that includes a warranty gives you the performance of a classic medium format lens with far less financial risk.

Question 5

What does 'SMC' mean on Pentax lenses?

Accepted Answer

SMC stands for Super Multi Coating — Pentax's multi-layer anti-reflective coating applied to lens elements. It reduces internal reflections and flare, which is especially important on medium format lenses where glass elements are large. The result is better contrast and color accuracy in challenging lighting, including backlit scenes.

Question 6

Can I use the Pentax SMC 6x7 90mm f/2.8 on a digital camera?

Accepted Answer

With a third-party adapter, you can mount Pentax 67 lenses on various mirrorless systems. The large image circle produced by this medium format lens means that on smaller sensors, you're using only the sharpest central portion of the optic with minimal vignetting. Autofocus and electronic communication won't be available regardless of body — it's manual focus only via adapter. Always check that an adapter exists for your specific body's mount before purchasing.
