Question 1

What is the RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35?

Accepted Answer

The RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35 is a cinema camera in RED's DSMC3 lineup. It uses a 35.4MP Super 35 CMOS sensor and records up to 8K DCI (8192×4320) in REDCODE RAW to CFexpress Type B cards. The S35 sensor format makes it compatible with a wide range of cinema lenses designed for the Super 35 frame.

Question 2

How does the V-RAPTOR 8K S35 differ from the V-RAPTOR 8K VV?

Accepted Answer

The core difference is sensor size. The VV (Vista Vision) variant uses a larger full-frame sensor, while the S35 version uses a Super 35 sensor — roughly equivalent to APS-C. Both share the same DSMC3 architecture and color science, so the two cameras match well as a dual-camera setup. The S35 format also opens up a broader selection of PL and cinema glass that was originally designed for Super 35.

Question 3

What dynamic range does the RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35 have?

Accepted Answer

The V-RAPTOR 8K S35 delivers 16.5+ stops of dynamic range. That headroom is valuable for narrative and commercial work where extensive color grading is expected in post-production.

Question 4

What recording formats does the RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35 support?

Accepted Answer

The camera records in REDCODE RAW, RED's proprietary wavelet-compressed RAW format, to CFexpress Type B media. RAW recording at up to 8192×4320 (8K DCI) gives colorists maximum latitude in post. Proxy formats can be generated alongside the RAW files for faster editorial workflows.

Question 5

Does the RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35 have autofocus?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the V-RAPTOR 8K S35 supports autofocus, which is a notable feature for a cinema-class camera. It makes run-and-gun and documentary-style shooting more practical compared to many cinema cameras that rely entirely on manual focus pulls.

Question 6

What lens mount does the RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35 use?

Accepted Answer

The V-RAPTOR 8K S35 uses a PL-mount (Positive Lock), the standard cinema lens mount for glass from manufacturers like ARRI, Zeiss and Cooke. The Super 35 sensor crop makes it particularly well-suited to pair with cinema lenses originally designed for that format.

Question 7

Is buying a used RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35 a good idea?

Accepted Answer

A used RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35 is a smart way to access cinema-tier 8K RAW capture at a significantly lower outlay than new. At Camera-tweedehands.nl every second-hand body is professionally inspected and individually photographed so you know exactly what you're buying. All pre-owned units come with a minimum 12 months warranty and a 14-day return window, which removes much of the risk that usually comes with second-hand cinema gear.

Question 8

What CFexpress cards work with the RED V-RAPTOR 8K S35?

Accepted Answer

The camera uses CFexpress Type B cards. At 8K RAW data rates you need high-sustained-write-speed cards — look for cards rated for sustained write speeds of 1700 MB/s or higher from manufacturers like ProGrade Digital, Delkin or Sony. Slower cards may struggle at the highest frame rates and resolutions.
