Question 1

What does a circular polarising filter actually do?

Accepted Answer

A circular polariser (CPL) blocks polarised light — the kind that causes glare on water, windows and wet surfaces. Rotate the outer ring and you control how much reflection is cut. It also saturates colours and deepens skies in a way that can't be replicated in Lightroom or Photoshop, because the effect happens before light hits the sensor.

Question 2

What is the 2.5x factor on this filter?

Accepted Answer

The 2.5x figure is the exposure factor: when the polariser is fully engaged, it absorbs roughly 1.3 stops of light. Your camera's metering handles this automatically in most shooting modes, but it's worth keeping in mind when you're shooting handheld in lower light and don't want to drop below a safe shutter speed.

Question 3

What does 'Super MC HR Digital' coating mean on a Rodenstock filter?

Accepted Answer

MC stands for multi-coating — multiple anti-reflection layers on both glass surfaces to suppress flare and ghosting. HR Digital refers to Rodenstock's high-resolution formula optimised for digital sensors, which are more reflective than film and more sensitive to internal reflections inside the filter stack. The result is better contrast and colour neutrality compared to single-coated alternatives.

Question 4

Which lenses use a 72mm filter thread?

Accepted Answer

A 72mm thread is common on mid-range telephoto and standard zoom lenses. Before buying, always check your specific lens barrel or cap for the ⌀ symbol followed by the thread diameter — it's stamped directly on most lenses.

Question 5

Is buying a used CPL filter worth it?

Accepted Answer

A polarising filter has no moving electronics and the glass doesn't degrade with normal use. The main thing to check is coating condition — scratches or cleaning marks are the real risk. Every used filter on Camera-tweedehands.nl is individually inspected and photographed, and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you can buy a pre-owned Rodenstock filter with confidence.

Question 6

Can I use this filter on a mirrorless camera?

Accepted Answer

Yes — as long as the lens you're attaching it to has a 72mm front thread, the camera system underneath (DSLR, mirrorless, medium format) makes no difference. Circular polarisers are specifically required for mirrorless and autofocus cameras; linear polarisers can interfere with phase-detect AF systems, which is exactly why this model is a circular design.
