Question 1

What cameras use CFexpress Type B cards?

Accepted Answer

CFexpress Type B is the card format used by many professional mirrorless and DSLR cameras, including the Nikon Z9, Nikon Z8, Canon EOS R3, Canon EOS R5, and Sony Alpha 1. Always check your specific camera's manual to confirm which CFexpress type it accepts — Type A and Type B are not interchangeable.

Question 2

Is 256GB enough for professional shooting?

Accepted Answer

For most photographers, 256GB comfortably covers a full day of shooting. As a rough guide, RAW files from a 45MP camera average around 50–80MB each, so 256GB holds thousands of stills. For high-bitrate video (4K/8K RAW), capacity fills faster, but 256GB is still a practical working size for most sessions.

Question 3

What does a fast read speed actually mean in practice?

Accepted Answer

A high read speed means files transfer from card to computer extremely quickly — with a compatible CFexpress reader, a full 256GB card can move to your hard drive in just a few minutes, though you'll need a Thunderbolt or USB4 reader to hit peak throughput. It also means the card can keep up with demanding burst shooting without the buffer slowing your camera down, provided your camera body can write fast enough to take advantage of it.

Question 4

Is buying a used CFexpress card safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as long as the card comes from a trustworthy source. Flash memory doesn't degrade the way mechanical hard drives do — a lightly used CFexpress card performs identically to a new one. Cards on Camera-tweedehands.nl are professionally inspected and come with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're covered if anything's off.

Question 5

Do I need a special card reader for CFexpress Type B?

Accepted Answer

Yes. CFexpress Type B cards require a dedicated CFexpress Type B reader — they won't fit in standard SD or older CompactFlash readers. For full transfer performance, make sure your reader supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt bandwidth; a slower reader will bottleneck transfers regardless of how fast the card itself is rated.

Question 6

Can a CFexpress Type B card replace a CompactFlash (CFast) card?

Accepted Answer

No. CFexpress Type B and CFast use different physical connectors and protocols — they're not interchangeable, even though they look similar in size. CFexpress Type B uses the NVMe protocol over a PCIe interface, which is why speeds are dramatically higher than CFast. Check your camera's spec sheet to confirm which format it accepts before buying.
