Question 1

Is the Sigma 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the 12mm end gives you an extremely wide field of view, which is great for capturing large swathes of the night sky including Milky Way arches. The constant f/4 aperture is workable for astro, though you'll need to push ISO higher than you would with an f/2.8 lens. Keep shutter speeds under roughly 20–25 seconds at 12mm to avoid star trails, using the NPF rule as your guide.

Question 2

What Canon cameras is this lens compatible with?

Accepted Answer

The Sigma 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art in Canon EF fit is compatible with all Canon EF-mount DSLR bodies — including full-frame cameras like the Canon EOS 5D series and crop-sensor bodies like the EOS 90D. On a crop-sensor body, the effective focal length becomes roughly 19–38mm, which reduces the ultra-wide impact significantly. For full ultra-wide performance, this lens is best used on a full-frame Canon DSLR.

Question 3

How does the Sigma 12-24mm f/4 compare to the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM?

Accepted Answer

The Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM goes 1mm wider and is weather-sealed, which gives it a practical edge in outdoor shooting. Independent optical tests have generally shown the Canon edges out the Sigma in most comparisons, but the Sigma holds its own as an Art-series lens and typically sells for considerably less on the used market. If weather sealing and that extra millimeter matter to you, the Canon is worth the premium — otherwise the Sigma is a serious optical performer.

Question 4

Does the Sigma 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art have image stabilization?

Accepted Answer

No, this lens does not include optical image stabilization. For landscape and astro work — where you're typically shooting on a tripod — that's rarely a problem. If you need stabilization for handheld wide-angle shooting, check whether your camera body offers in-body image stabilization (IBIS), though most Canon DSLRs do not.

Question 5

Can I use this lens on a Canon mirrorless camera with an adapter?

Accepted Answer

Yes — with Canon's EF-EOS R adapter, the Sigma 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art mounts onto Canon EOS R-series mirrorless bodies. Autofocus generally works via the adapter, though performance can vary. If you're primarily shooting mirrorless, you might also consider native RF-mount lenses like the Canon RF 14-35mm f/4 L IS USM for better integration.

Question 6

Is buying a used Sigma 12-24mm f/4 Art a safe choice?

Accepted Answer

Buying second-hand is very reasonable for this lens. It's a well-built Art-series optic with no moving external elements, which means less mechanical wear over time. At Camera-tweedehands.nl, every pre-owned lens is individually hand-inspected for optical and mechanical condition, and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty — so you're covered if anything turns out to be off. See the condition grading on this listing for details on cosmetic wear.

Question 7

What is the HSM autofocus motor and is it fast?

Accepted Answer

HSM stands for Hypersonic Motor — Sigma's ultrasonic AF system, similar in concept to Canon's USM. It's both fast and quiet, making it suitable for video work where a noisy AF motor would be picked up on camera audio. For landscape and astro use, you'll often be focusing manually or using a single AF acquisition, and HSM handles that reliably. Full-time manual override is also supported with HSM.

Question 8

Does the Sigma 12-24mm f4 Art fit on a Nikon DSLR?

Accepted Answer

This specific listing is the Canon EF version, so it does not fit Nikon F-mount bodies. Sigma does produce the 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art in a Nikon F mount variant — search specifically for that version if you're shooting Nikon. Mixing mounts without an adapter will damage your equipment, so always confirm the mount before purchasing.
