Question 1

How much light does a 1.4x teleconverter lose?

Accepted Answer

A 1.4x teleconverter costs you exactly 1 stop of light. So if your lens is f/2.8, it effectively becomes f/4 when the converter is attached. That's a manageable trade-off compared to the 2-stop penalty of a 2x teleconverter, and autofocus typically still works on most Nikon F bodies as long as the effective aperture stays at f/5.6 or faster.

Question 2

Which lenses work with the Sigma 1.4x EX APO DG for Nikon F?

Accepted Answer

The converter is designed for Nikon F-mount telephoto and super-telephoto lenses. It works best with dedicated telephoto primes and fast zooms — generally lenses with a maximum aperture of f/4 or wider. Using it on slower lenses can push the effective aperture past the autofocus threshold on many camera bodies, so manual focus may be needed in those cases.

Question 3

Does the Sigma 1.4x EX APO DG work on mirrorless cameras?

Accepted Answer

It mounts on Nikon F-mount bodies natively. On Nikon Z-series mirrorless cameras you can use it via the FTZ or FTZ II adapter — the converter sits between the adapter and your F-mount lens. Autofocus performance in that setup depends on both the lens and the camera body's adapter compatibility.

Question 4

Is buying a used Sigma teleconverter worth it?

Accepted Answer

Teleconverters have no moving optical elements and no image stabilisation mechanisms to wear out, which makes them one of the safest used optics to buy. A second-hand Sigma 1.4x EX APO DG in good condition performs identically to a new one. Every item on Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're covered if anything unexpected comes up.

Question 5

What is the difference between a 1.4x and a 2x teleconverter?

Accepted Answer

A 1.4x converter gives you 40% more reach at the cost of 1 stop of light, while a 2x converter doubles your focal length but costs 2 stops. The 1.4x version is generally the sharper, more autofocus-friendly choice because the optical path is less stretched and the aperture loss is smaller. If you need maximum reach and can live with manual focus or brighter light, a 2x makes sense — but for everyday use the 1.4x is the more versatile option.

Question 6

How heavy is the Sigma 1.4x EX APO DG Teleconverter?

Accepted Answer

It weighs 143g, which is light enough that you'll barely notice it in your bag.
