Question 1

Is the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary compatible with Canon RF bodies?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Canon RF version of this lens mounts directly onto any Canon RF body — including APS-C models like the Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R10 — without an adapter. It uses the native RF mount's electronic contacts for full autofocus and aperture control.

Question 2

What does 'DC DN' mean on the Sigma 15mm 1.4?

Accepted Answer

'DC' means the lens is designed for APS-C (crop sensor) cameras specifically, not full-frame. 'DN' means it's built for digital mirrorless systems rather than DSLRs. Using a DC lens on a full-frame RF body will result in heavy vignetting, so it's best kept on APS-C mirrorless cameras.

Question 3

How does the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 perform for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

The f/1.4 aperture gives you more than a full stop of light advantage over an f/2 lens, which directly translates to half the exposure time or one full stop lower ISO for equivalent brightness. At 15mm on an APS-C body, the 500-rule allows exposures of roughly 33 seconds before star trailing becomes visible — more than enough for milky-way shots.

Question 4

Does the Canon RF version of the Sigma 15mm 1.4 have an aperture ring?

Accepted Answer

No. Unlike the Sony E and Fuji X versions of this lens, the Canon RF version does not have a dedicated aperture ring on the barrel. Instead, it features Canon's control ring, which can be customised through the camera body's menu system.

Question 5

Is the autofocus on the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC DN suitable for video?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The stepping motor autofocus is specifically designed for video use — it operates quietly and moves smoothly between focus distances, which is important for continuous AF during filming. It won't produce the hunting or clicking sounds associated with older motor types.

Question 6

How does the Sigma 15mm 1.4 compare to the Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC DN?

Accepted Answer

The Sigma 12mm f/1.4 DC DN gives a wider field of view — useful for tighter spaces or more dramatic skyscapes — but the 15mm f/1.4 produces less distortion and is generally easier to correct in post. One practical point: the 12mm DC DN lacks an AF/MF switch on the barrel, while the 15mm Contemporary offers better handling ergonomics.

Question 7

Can I use the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 for landscape photography, or is it too wide?

Accepted Answer

15mm on APS-C gives a field of view equivalent to roughly 24mm on full-frame — wide, but a very usable landscape focal length. It's wide enough to include dramatic foreground interest while keeping the horizon and sky in frame. If you want something with a bit more reach, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Canon RF is a natural companion zoom in the same lens lineup.

Question 8

Is the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC DN sharp across the whole frame?

Accepted Answer

The Contemporary line prioritises optical correction and corner-to-corner sharpness. This lens delivers high resolution across the image field, with minimal distortion and vignetting for an ultra-wide prime at f/1.4.
