Question 1

Is the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art good for astrophotography?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the constant f/2 aperture is a real advantage for night sky shooting. A full stop brighter than f/2.8 means either lower ISO or shorter exposures, both of which reduce noise and star trailing. At 24mm you get a wide field of view for Milky Way shots, and at 35mm you can frame tighter compositions without switching lenses. Just keep in mind there's no image stabilisation, so you'll want a solid tripod regardless.

Question 2

Does the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art work on full-frame Canon bodies?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Canon EF mount version is designed for full-frame sensors and covers the full image circle on bodies like the Canon EOS 5D series and 6D series. It also works on APS-C Canon DSLRs, where the 24–35mm range translates to roughly 38–56mm equivalent — more of a standard zoom than a wide-angle on crop sensor bodies.

Question 3

How sharp is the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 compared to Canon EF primes?

Accepted Answer

Independent optical tests have shown the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art outresolving several Canon EF prime lenses at equivalent apertures across the focal range. The edge-to-edge consistency at f/2 is particularly strong for a zoom lens. If you're currently carrying separate 24mm and 35mm primes, this single lens can realistically match or beat them in centre sharpness — and save you lens changes in the field.

Question 4

What filter size does the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art use?

Accepted Answer

The filter thread is 82 mm — on the larger side, which is typical for lenses with this combination of focal length and fast aperture. If you're planning to use ND or polarising filters for landscape work, factor in the cost of 82 mm filters or a step-down ring system.

Question 5

Does the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 have image stabilisation?

Accepted Answer

No, there's no optical image stabilisation built into this lens. For handheld shooting in low light, the f/2 aperture helps you maintain faster shutter speeds, which partially compensates. For landscape and astrophotography — the two main use cases — you're typically on a tripod anyway, so the lack of IS rarely matters in practice.

Question 6

How does the HSM autofocus perform on Canon EF bodies?

Accepted Answer

The HSM (Hypersonic Motor) delivers fast and near-silent autofocus, which works well for both stills and video on compatible Canon EF DSLRs. Full-time manual override is supported, so you can fine-tune focus without switching AF modes. For landscape work where you're often zone-focusing or using live view, the AF is more than capable — it's also well-regarded for accuracy in third-party testing.

Question 7

Is buying a used Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art worth it?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — Art-series lenses are built to a high mechanical standard with metal mounts and durable construction, which means a well-maintained second-hand copy holds up extremely well. Every used lens on Camera-tweedehands.nl is individually inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're not buying blind. For a lens this heavy and optically ambitious, the used market is one of the smartest ways to access it.

Question 8

What lenses are comparable to the Sigma 24-35mm f/2 Art for Canon EF?

Accepted Answer

The most direct comparison in the Canon ecosystem is the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM — wider zoom range but a stop slower at the long end, and considerably more expensive new. The Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is worth considering if you primarily shoot at 24mm and want that extra half-stop. If you're open to carrying two lenses, pairing a 24mm and 35mm prime covers similar ground but at the cost of lens changes in the field.
