What makes the Sony A9 special?

The Sony A9 — officially the Sony Alpha 9 — was the camera that proved mirrorless could fully replace a professional sports DSLR. Its defining feature is a stacked CMOS sensor with integrated memory, which enables the 20 fps blackout-free shooting. Unlike a conventional sensor that reads data row by row, the integrated memory allows the A9 to read the entire sensor almost simultaneously, eliminating both the rolling-shutter distortion expected at that speed and the viewfinder blackout normally seen between frames. You can track a subject through the EVF at 20 fps exactly as you would through an optical viewfinder — you never lose sight of the action.

The 693 phase-detect AF points provide wide coverage across the frame. In real-world sports photography, the A9's subject tracking performs reliably in challenging conditions. When the A9 launched it was directly compared to cameras like the Nikon D5 and the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II — flagship DSLRs that had dominated professional sports photography — and in burst speed and AF blackout performance it proved competitive.

The electronic shutter reaches 1/32,000s without making a sound, which matters in environments like tennis, golf, or concert photography where a clicking shutter is intrusive.
