Question 1

What is the Sony FX3A and how does it differ from a regular mirrorless camera?

Accepted Answer

The Sony FX3A is a dedicated cinema camera, not a stills-first mirrorless body. It's built around a full-frame 12.1MP BSI-CMOS sensor and is designed with video workflows in mind — dual CFexpress Type B + SD card slots for fast media, a 200,000-actuation shutter rated for heavy use, and a compact body that rigs up easily. While regular mirrorless cameras split their attention between photo and video, the FX3A leans hard into the cinema use case.

Question 2

Does the Sony FX3A have in-body image stabilisation?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the FX3A has built-in image stabilisation. For handheld video — especially in run-and-gun documentary or event work — that matters a lot. Combined with stabilised Sony FE lenses, you get multiple layers of optical smoothing without needing a gimbal for every shot.

Question 3

What lenses are compatible with the Sony FX3A?

Accepted Answer

The FX3A uses the Sony E mount, which gives you access to Sony's full FE lens lineup — from wide primes to long telephoto zooms. Because the crop factor is 1.0x, full-frame FE lenses render their native field of view. The broad E-mount ecosystem means you're never short of glass options, whether you're shooting narrative, documentary, or event work.

Question 4

What memory cards does the Sony FX3A use?

Accepted Answer

The FX3A takes CFexpress Type B cards in one slot and SD cards in the other. CFexpress Type B delivers the high write speeds needed for 4K recording at elevated bitrates, while the SD slot offers more flexibility for backup recording or stills. Make sure your CFexpress cards are rated for sustained video write speeds.

Question 5

Is the Sony FX3A weather-sealed?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the body is weather-sealed for dust and moisture resistance. That makes it a practical choice for outdoor shoots where conditions aren't perfectly controlled — though 'weather-sealed' isn't the same as waterproof, so you'll still want to avoid prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

Question 6

What frame rates does the Sony FX3A support?

Accepted Answer

The FX3A records up to 4K UHD (3840×2160) — check the specific variant listing for the full breakdown of frame rate options at each resolution. For cinema and documentary work, having 4K as your ceiling means you're capturing more than enough detail for professional delivery, with room to reframe in post without losing sharpness.

Question 7

Is buying a used Sony FX3A worth it?

Accepted Answer

A used FX3A makes a lot of sense if you want cinema-grade full-frame 4K performance without paying new prices. Cinema cameras tend to be handled carefully by professionals who understand how equipment should be stored and maintained. Every used FX3A on Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're not buying blind — and 14-day returns mean you can test it properly in your own workflow.

Question 8

How does the Sony FX3A's autofocus perform for video?

Accepted Answer

The FX3A has autofocus built in, which is genuinely useful for solo operators or small crews where a dedicated focus puller isn't an option. For cinema cameras in general, having reliable AF while keeping cinematic frame rates is a big deal — it means you can keep your eye on composition rather than the focus ring during a moving interview or unpredictable event.

Question 9

What battery does the Sony FX3A use?

Accepted Answer

The FX3A runs on the NP-FZ100 battery — the same pack used across the Sony Alpha mirrorless lineup. If you're already shooting Sony stills cameras, you likely already own compatible batteries and chargers, which cuts down on the extra kit you need to buy. Spare NP-FZ100 batteries are also widely available second-hand.
