Question 1

What is the Sony PXW-FS5 II used for?

Accepted Answer

The Sony PXW-FS5 II is a professional cinema camcorder designed for documentary, news gathering (ENG), independent film, and event videography. Its Super 35 CMOS sensor and 4K recording make it a go-to tool for content creators who need cinema-quality footage in a lightweight, portable package.

Question 2

Does the Sony PXW-FS5 II shoot 4K?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the PXW-FS5 II records up to 4K resolution. For slow-motion shooting, it steps down to Full HD (1920×1080). That's a common trade-off in cinema cameras — you get the slow-motion flexibility at the cost of resolution.

Question 3

What is the difference between the Sony PXW-FS5 and the PXW-FS5 II?

Accepted Answer

The PXW-FS5 II is the updated version of the original PXW-FS5, primarily adding internal electronic variable ND filtering and improved S-Log3 gamma support right out of the box without a paid firmware upgrade. Both share the Super 35 CMOS sensor and similar body design, but the Mark II version makes professional color science more accessible from day one.

Question 4

Is the Sony PXW-FS5 II good for solo filmmakers?

Accepted Answer

It's genuinely well-suited for solo work. The 830-gram body is light enough for extended handheld or gimbal use, and the built-in autofocus means you're not constantly hunting focus when you can't operate the lens manually. The built-in Wi-Fi also lets you control the camera remotely via a smartphone or tablet.

Question 5

What memory cards does the Sony PXW-FS5 II use?

Accepted Answer

The PXW-FS5 II accepts both SD cards and Memory Stick media. SD cards are the more practical choice today — widely available and affordable. Having dual-format support means you're unlikely to be caught without compatible storage in the field.

Question 6

Is buying a used Sony PXW-FS5 II worth it?

Accepted Answer

For a professional Super 35 cinema camera with 4K, autofocus, and Wi-Fi, buying second-hand makes a lot of sense. Cinema cameras tend to live in controlled production environments rather than being thrown in a bag daily like a consumer camera. Every used PXW-FS5 II on Camera-tweedehands.nl comes with a minimum 12 months warranty and is individually inspected, so you're not buying blind.

Question 7

What battery does the Sony PXW-FS5 II use?

Accepted Answer

The PXW-FS5 II runs on the Sony NP-F970 battery — a large-capacity L-series battery that's been an industry standard for decades. That's a genuine advantage: NP-F batteries are cheap, widely available second-hand, and compatible with a huge range of accessories like LED lights and monitors.

Question 8

Does the Sony PXW-FS5 II have autofocus?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it has built-in autofocus. For a cinema-oriented camera in this class, having reliable AF is a practical asset — especially during run-and-gun documentary shoots or when you're operating the camera alone and can't pull focus manually at the same time.
