Question 1

What is the Sony PXW-FX9?

Accepted Answer

The Sony PXW-FX9 is a full-frame cinema camcorder designed for professional video production. It features a 35-megapixel full-frame sensor, 561 autofocus points, high-speed slow-motion recording, and a weather-sealed shoulder-mount body weighing approximately 2000g (body only) — all on the Sony E-mount platform.

Question 2

Does the Sony PXW-FX9 have in-body image stabilisation?

Accepted Answer

No, the FX9 does not have in-body image stabilisation (IBIS). For handheld or run-and-gun shooting, you'll want to use optically stabilised lenses or an external gimbal. Its shoulder-mount form factor does help naturally with stability on the move.

Question 3

What lenses work with the Sony PXW-FX9?

Accepted Answer

The FX9 uses the Sony E-mount, so it's compatible with the full range of Sony FE lenses for full-frame coverage, as well as APS-C E-mount lenses (which will apply a crop). You can also adapt PL, EF, and other cinema lenses using third-party mount adapters.

Question 4

What memory cards does the Sony PXW-FX9 use?

Accepted Answer

The FX9 accepts both SD cards and XQD cards across its dual card slots. XQD cards handle high-bitrate recording reliably, while SD slots offer a widely available backup option. Dual-slot recording is great for simultaneous backup or relay recording on long shoots.

Question 5

What is the ISO range of the Sony PXW-FX9?

Accepted Answer

The FX9 has an ISO range of 800 to 4000. This range is where the sensor is optimised to perform with the least noise — typical for a cinema-focused camera that prioritises clean, filmic images. For most broadcast and documentary work, you'll rarely need to push beyond this range anyway.

Question 6

Can the Sony PXW-FX9 shoot slow motion?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the FX9 can record up to 180 frames per second. Keep in mind that maximum frame rates are typically available at lower resolutions — check your specific recording format settings for the resolution available at each frame rate. This makes it useful for sports coverage, action sequences, and creative documentary moments that benefit from extended slow-motion playback.

Question 7

Is the Sony PXW-FX9 weather sealed?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the FX9 has weather sealing, making it suitable for outdoor shooting in light rain or dusty environments. It's built as a professional broadcast tool, so durability in the field was a core design consideration.

Question 8

What battery does the Sony PXW-FX9 use?

Accepted Answer

The FX9 runs on Sony BP-U60 batteries, which are the standard Sony professional camcorder battery — widely available and compatible with a broad range of Sony broadcast and cinema gear. This makes sharing batteries across a kit straightforward on professional productions.

Question 9

Does the Sony PXW-FX9 have audio inputs?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the FX9 has both a microphone jack and a headphone jack for monitoring, plus a built-in microphone for on-camera audio capture. For professional productions requiring balanced audio from shotgun mics or radio receivers, check the specific unit listing for full connectivity details.

Question 10

Is buying a used Sony PXW-FX9 worth it?

Accepted Answer

For professional video work, buying a used FX9 makes a lot of sense. It's a camera built to broadcast standards and intended for heavy use, so well-maintained units have plenty of life left. Every second-hand FX9 on Camera-tweedehands.nl is professionally inspected and comes with a minimum 12 months warranty, so you're covered if anything comes up.

Question 11

How does the Sony PXW-FX9 compare to the Sony FX6?

Accepted Answer

Both cameras share Sony's full-frame cinema DNA and E-mount compatibility, but the FX9 is a shoulder-mount camcorder — a self-contained broadcast-style body with its own ergonomic rig — while the Sony FX6 is a more compact cinema camera body. The FX9 is typically the better fit for solo documentary or ENG-style operators who want everything in one unit without building up a separate rig.

Question 12

Does the Sony PXW-FX9 have Wi-Fi?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the FX9 has built-in Wi-Fi, which supports file transfer, remote control, and streaming workflows. This is a practical feature for broadcast environments where quick delivery or remote monitoring of the camera is needed.

Question 13

What recording formats does the Sony PXW-FX9 support?

Accepted Answer

The FX9 records to both SD and XQD cards, which are the physical media — but for codec and container format specifics such as XAVC support, bitrate options, and colour space settings, check the individual unit listing or Sony's official documentation for the full breakdown. These details matter a lot for post-production workflows, so it's worth confirming before you buy.
