Question 1

Does the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Macro work on Nikon Z cameras?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III VXD Macro is built natively for the Nikon Z mount, so it communicates directly with Nikon Z bodies — no adapter needed. Autofocus, image stabilisation handshake, and EXIF data all work as expected.

Question 2

What is VXD autofocus and why does it matter for macro photography?

Accepted Answer

VXD stands for Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive — it's a linear motor system that moves lens elements quickly and very quietly. For macro photography this matters because you often need the lens to hunt across a wide focus range (from 1:1 close focus all the way to infinity) without hunting slowly or making noise that might spook a subject like an insect.

Question 3

How does the Tamron 90mm macro compare to the Nikon Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S?

Accepted Answer

Both deliver 1:1 magnification and excellent sharpness, but the Nikon 105mm adds in-lens optical stabilisation (VR), which is handy if your body doesn't have IBIS. The Tamron 90mm is generally more compact and lighter, and the VXD motor offers fast, snappy focusing. If you shoot handheld macro without body IBIS, the Nikon might have an edge. For everything else, the Tamron holds its own comfortably.

Question 4

Can I use this lens for portrait photography, or is it only for close-up work?

Accepted Answer

90mm at f/2.8 is a classic portrait focal length — it flatters faces with minimal distortion and separates subjects from backgrounds nicely. The 12-blade circular aperture produces smooth, rounded bokeh. Many photographers use this lens as their go-to portrait prime and treat the macro capability as a bonus.

Question 5

What magnification ratio does the Tamron 90mm Di III VXD achieve?

Accepted Answer

The lens reaches a 1:1 (life-size) magnification ratio at its minimum focus distance, meaning the subject is reproduced on the sensor at its actual size. This is the standard benchmark for a true macro lens.

Question 6

Is it worth buying a used Tamron 90mm macro lens?

Accepted Answer

Macro lenses are typically used carefully — there's no rough sports shooting involved — which means used copies tend to be in good condition. On Camera-tweedehands.nl every second-hand lens is professionally inspected and individually photographed, and you get a minimum 12 months warranty plus a 14-day return window, so the risk of buying pre-owned is minimal.

Question 7

How many aperture blades does the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III VXD have?

Accepted Answer

It has 12 aperture blades arranged in a circular pattern. More blades and a rounder opening produce smoother, more natural-looking bokeh — especially visible in out-of-focus highlights like light specks in the background of a macro or portrait shot.

Question 8

Does the Tamron 90mm macro f/2.8 Di III work with Nikon Z full-frame and APS-C bodies?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it works on both full-frame (FX) Nikon Z bodies like the Z6 III and Z8, and on APS-C (DX) bodies like the Z50 or Zfc. On an APS-C body the effective focal length is roughly 135mm, but the maximum f/2.8 aperture remains the same.
