Used 35mm SLR cameras

In this category you'll find used 35mm SLR cameras: analogue bodies that shoot on 35mm film, with a mirror and pentaprism that let you look precisely through the lens. It is the heart of classic film photography and at the same time the broadest range within analogue. Here you choose between fully mechanical classics that you set manually and electronically controlled pro bodies with autofocus and advanced exposure metering.

The stock leans heavily on Nikon and Canon, alongside brands such as Olympus, Pentax, Leica and Minolta. If you want to work in a purist way without depending on electronics, the Nikon F3 is a popular choice: a robust, semi-mechanical body that keeps working at one shutter speed even without a battery. If you are looking for a workhorse with a fast motor and reliable metering, look to the Nikon F6, the modern successor to the F5 with refined autofocus and exposure metering, or to the Canon 1V HS, Canon's most advanced film body with a fast motor drive. Anyone who wants something a little different looks to the Canon A-1, a versatile electronic classic with a range of exposure programmes. Don't forget the glass: a good SLR calls for a suitable lens, so also take a stroll past the used lenses.

Buying a used 35mm SLR: what should you look out for?

A 35mm SLR is often surprisingly robust mechanically, but it does have some age to it. With used bodies you therefore always check the shutter curtain for pinholes or creases, the mirror for smears and the light seals (the foam rubber strips) for hardening. With electronically controlled cameras it pays to check that the exposure meter is accurate and that the electronics respond properly. With us, every body is professionally inspected, so you know the basics are in order before you load film.

Mechanical or electronic?

Fully mechanical bodies such as the Nikon F3 also work without a battery at the main shutter speed β€” only the built-in light meter needs power. That makes them popular with those who like to shoot independently and by feel. Electronically controlled cameras such as the Canon A-1 and the pro bodies Nikon F6 and Canon 1V HS do rely on a battery for the shutter speeds, but in return give you handy automation and more precise metering. Neither is better; it depends on how you want to work.

Mind the lens mount

The biggest pitfall with a first film camera is the lens fitting. A Nikon body calls for a different mount than a Canon, Pentax or Leica R. Choose your system first and build your glass around it. If you're in doubt, search our analogue cameras category and the used lenses for combinations that go together.

Who is this for?

For the beginner film photographer who wants to experience classic, slow photography, for the advanced photographer looking for a reliable body as a second system, and for the collector in search of iconic cameras. All cameras come with at least 12 months' warranty and a 14-day return period, so you can try out at your leisure whether analogue suits you.
