Profoto from Stockholm has built flash since 1968 and became the standard in rental studios through one design principle: every light shaper slides over the head and can be zoomed, so one softbox or reflector goes from hard to soft light. The Pro packs (Pro-10, Pro-11) deliver the shortest flash durations, the D2 monolights are the studio workhorses, and the battery-powered B1X, B10 and B10X brought that same quality to location, with TTL and high-speed sync via the Air Remote. The A series (A1, A2, A10) is the round-head on-camera flash that plays along in the system.
Profoto gear is used professionally and therefore intensively. We measure the output, check flash tube and modelling lamp, form the capacitors, test the Air link and, on battery strobes, the capacity of the battery, which we grade separately. Light shapers are checked for ribs, fabric, speedring and the Profoto bayonet. Reflectors and OCF accessories hardly wear and are the biggest bargain used.
