Buying used Laowa: macro, wide-angle and cine

Venus Optics from Hefei, China, has existed since 2013 and chose niches from the start. The 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro magnifies to 2:1 without extension tubes, the 24mm f/14 Probe literally crawls into a glass of water, and the Zero-D series (9mm, 12mm, 15mm) delivers extreme wide-angle without the barrel distortion you normally accept. For mirrorless cameras there are autofocus variants of a few models, and the cine line offers anamorphic and spherical primes with T-stops and gears.

Most Laowa lenses are manual and mechanical, so we mainly check the focus and aperture rings for smoothness, the glass for scratches and dust and, on macro lenses, whether the internal mechanism runs evenly over the full travel. On autofocus versions we test the motor and the contacts.
